Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) blends the best of striking, wrestling, and
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At Adam Ryan’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy, the MMA
class incorporates the three phases of fighting: striking, clinch work and
ground work. Muay Thai will be practiced for the striking (stand up) phase,
free style/greco wrestling will be practiced for the clinch work (take-down)
phase and BJJ will be practiced for the ground phase. Each phase of mixed
martial arts will be practiced individually and in combination, as well as
the transitions between phases e.g. flowing into submission while striking.
You will find that the mixed martial arts classes will work your
conditioning greatly due to the striking portion. Your muscles will also be
worked during take-downs as explosive muscle contractions will occur.
Submission attempts will work your muscles in a static way as the muscles
contract during clinch work and while maintaining position on the ground.

Muay Thai (Beginner’s welcome)
In our Muay Thai class pad work and partner training will build or enhance your Muay Thai technique which is great conditioning. “Traditional Muay Thai, as it is practiced today, varies slightly from the original art and uses kicks and punches in a ring with gloves similar to those used in Western boxing. Muay Thai is referred to as "The Science of Eight Limbs", as the hands, shins, elbows, and knees are all used extensively in this art. A master practitioner of Muay Thai thus has the ability to execute strikes using eight "points of contact," as opposed to "two points" (fists) in Western boxing and "four points" (fists, feet) used in the primarily sport-oriented forms of martial arts. Muay Thai is an especially versatile, powerful, straightforward martial arts. The basic offensive techniques in Muay Thai use fists, elbows, shins, feet, and knees to strike the opponent.
To bind the opponent for both offensive and defensive purposes, small
amounts of stand-up grappling are used: the clinch. With the success of Muay
Thai in mixed martial arts fighting, it has become the de facto martial art
of choice for competitive stand-up fighters. As a result, it has evolved
accordingly and incorporated much more powerful hand striking techniques
used in western style boxing, and the Thai style of exchanging blow for blow
is no longer favorable. Note: when Muay Thai fighters compete against
fighters of other styles (and if the rules permit it), they almost
invariably emphasize elbow (sok) and knee (kao) techniques to gain a
distinct advantage in fighting. Almost all techniques in Muay Thai use the
entire body movement, rotating the hip with each kick, punch, and block. The
rotation of the hips in Muay Thai techniques, and intensive focus on "core
muscles" (such as abdominal muscles and surrounding muscles) is very
distinctive and is what sets Muay Thai apart from other styles of martial

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)
Imagine a smaller person being able to overcome a larger attacker with ease,
without the use of weapons, strikes, or kicks. Welcome to the art of
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art that focuses on ground grappling. It encompasses effective foot work, clinch fighting, take-downs, throws, escapes, ground control, chokes and joint locks. Use of leverage and balance is taught so that a smaller individual will be able to overcome a larger
attacker in a real life confrontation without having to punch or kick. Traditional jiu-jitsu uniforms are worn and a belt system is used for grading. Learning BJJ will enable you to deal with someone who is punching or kicking you, taking you down, and what to do once you are on the ground.
BJJ Beginner's
The BJJ beginner’s class is for beginning student’s and those who want to
brush up on their techniques. During each class a minimum number of moves
will be taught which will enable the student to learn and practice the fine
points of each technique. Having fun is stressed while learning jiu-jitsu in
a noncompetitive environment. The core basics are introduced in our
beginner’s classes, which include: correct postures for every position, key
applications for self-defense, practical drills, and exercises that will
encourage proper movement, breathing and positional awareness.
